Companies step on the gas for road safety

MUMBAI: When it comes to road safety, organizations are asking their employees to buckle up. Following the death of Union rural development minister Gopinath Munde, organizations are insisting that employees take certain road safety measures very seriously, even though some of these are not mandated by law.

Strongly worded internal mailers have been sent by a few companies to their employees post the incident to ensure they abide by the HR department norms in what takes the employee-employer relationship to a new level, where welfare goes beyond and is not restricted to office boundaries.

Siemens and Maruti Suzuki India are some of the companies which sent out advisories to remind employees of their responsibilities of safe driving. Siemens is also considering repeating a course of defensive driving across the organization this year.

“While we can blame the non-functioning of traffic lights, the corruption in the police force, the bad condition of roads and so on, we cannot shy away from our own responsibilities of safe driving,” Siemens’ executive
VP (HR) S Ramesh Shankar told employees in a mailer, while appealing to all employees to champion the cause of road safety.

Companies have strict norms with respect to safety not just at plants but on roads as well. At Hindustan Unilever (HUL), employees who are travelling are advised to stay off the highway post 7 pm. With a vision to become an injury-free organization, HUL extends its safety mission to its associates as well. “We believe a person’s life cannot be compartmentalized between ‘at work’ and ‘off work’, especially for safety. Several inputs are provided to the employees to make their lives safe while travelling as well as when they are at home with their near and dear ones,” an HUL spokesperson said.

Maruti Suzuki India, through its network of over 320 Maruti Driving Schools, now also organizes on-site road safety training capsules for employees of different
corporates. “Several companies such as Cairn India, Reliance, Vodafone, Mahindra Satyam, Eli Lilly and Indian Oil have sent their employees to improve their driving
skills to Maruti Driving Schools or requested for on-site training,” said Mahesh Rajoria, general manager (driving training & loyalty programme), Maruti Suzuki.

The company has trained around 40,000 people from different organizations in the last three years. “Most of these companies wanted their employees to be trained in different aspects of driving skills, as most of them are out on the field for a good part of the day. The idea was to customize skills like defensive riding or driving on road — how to protect yourself from collisions and injuries — as most salespersons are on road for at least six hours everyday,” said Rajoria.

Some of the initiatives taken by Marico on road safety measures include conducting periodic checks of vehicle documents of employees to ensure compliance as also conducting eye tests for truck drivers and introducing new truck drivers to a video on safe road practices. “For us, safety is not limited only at work but in all facets of life. Our safety initiatives not only cover our members but also the community at large in order to spread awareness that helps take necessary precautions and prevent untoward incidences,” said Ashutosh Telang, EVP & global head (HR), Marico.

As a way to ensure top-of-mind recall, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) plays audio tapes on safe road behaviours at its exit gates in some of its manufacturing facilities at the end of working hours. “These tapes act as a ready checklist, recounting messages such as a ‘buckle up before you hit the road’ reminder to ‘wear helmets’ as a few of the important messages,” said Emrana Sheikh, VP-HR, automotive division & international operations-AFS, M&M.
