From geom-bar.r, the following info:

geom_bar is designed to make it easy to create bar charts that show counts (or sums of weights).

Example:

ggplot(mpg, aes(class)) +
    geom_bar(aes(weight = displ))

appears to work.

weight is an aesthetic pertaining to stat_count() which is what geom_bar() uses by default. Stating that geom_bar() understands it would be untrue, as it will not work with any other statistic

Ok, I understand your point. Two remarks:

1. To me, the sentence "geom_bar understands the following aesthetics" meant that no other aesthetics are understood. Maybe a sentence like "In addition, aesthetics are passed on to the stat specified by argument stat." would help. (Of course, such a sentence might also be relevant for other geom's).
2. The documentation page of geom_bar is at the same time the documentation page of stat_count. Thus, the same page would be the perfect place to list the aesthetics that stat_count understands. Where else can one get the information that stat_count understands weight in the documentation (and what it does with it)?

Oh - I missed that stat_count is documented the same place - in that case it should of course be included. Thanks for pointing that out
