Katy was born and raised in Flint, Michigan. After attending the University of Michigan-Flint and Central Michigan University, she graduated with her Bachelor of Science in photojournalism. Before being hired at the Midland Daily News, she completed internships with two Michigan newspapers, the Saginaw News and the Ann Arbor News, and also the Hutchinson News in Kansas.
